Unit: The Cell

Title: Plant vs. Animal Cells

Lesson Overview
This lesson is going to cover the similarities and differences between animal and plant cells. I will also be giving a quiz on the information we have covered so far to make sure the students are retaining the information and also see if there are particular areas in which they are having trouble before moving on.

Objectives: Students will be able to…
  1. Distinguish the difference between a plant and animal cell.
  2. Explain the similarities and differences between plant and animal cells.

Materials
  1. Articles describing similarities between plant and animal cells
  2. Articles describing differences between plant and animal cells
  3. Quiz on material that has been gone over

Safety Issues
  • Reiterate how the groups will move, to keep aisles clear, and to walk.

Instruction

Opening
As the class begins the students will take out their homework to be collected and they will have 5 min to answer the question on the board. Do you think plant and animal cells are the same or different, why or why not. This will activate prior knowledge and get them thinking about the topic for this lesson. I will then collect the responses and break the class up into groups of 4.

Learning Activities
The learning activity is called “partners” Each group of four will pair up, each pair will be given an article either going over the similarities and differences of plant and animal cells. The pairs, from all groups, with the same material will then move to one side of the room while the other students move to another side. The partners will then read the material, take down the important information, consult with the other pairs that are working on the same material if they need to, and then come up with a way to teach this information to the rest of their group. Once the pairs have done this they will then reform their groups of four and each pair will teach the other pair the material they learned. After the groups have taught each other the material I will ask so how are animal cells and plant cells similar? How are they different? Why are they different in that way, ie. Why does a plant cell have chloroplast and an animal cell doesn’t? I will put the responses on the board, which will allow any group that might have missed important information to get it. The class will then go back to their assigned seats for the quiz.

Closing
After collecting the quizzes, I will go over the answers and ask if there are any questions in terms of why an answer was what it was or if they were confused by anything. I will then inform them that the next class we will be starting organelles, and ask them what type of cell contains organelles? (Eukaryotic) Also ask them why cells have different organelles? (to carry out different functions that are necessary for life.)

Assessment
The assessments for this lesson will be the responses I get after the partners activity and also the quiz.

Homework
To write 2-3 paragraphs answering the question, What functions does a cell need to be able to do in order to be considered alive?
